About the YWCA

YWCA Brisbane aims to provide connections in and through the Brisbane community that will not only help relieve feelings of misfortune, helplessness and suffering, but also proactively help young women overcome obstacles, and develop skills and leadership capabilities that have the power to change their futures.

YWCA Brisbane programs and services focus on challenging expectations by lending a hand and an ear to those in need. Our programs provide support and education, foster lifelong skills and encourage leaders.

Purpose

Locally, YWCA Brisbane exists to:

  • Create a space for young women to talk and lead
  • Mobilise all women to support young women to achieve their dreams
  • Encourage young women to participate in the creation of just and inclusive communities.

These ideals are in tune with the national and global priorities of our organisation:

  • Empowerment and Self Determination - supporting women, young women and communities to engage actively in the process of choosing and creating their own futures
  • Women’s Leadership - promoting and supporting women, particularly young women, to be leaders in their lives and communities and valuing this as a means of creating a society where equity and human rights prevail
  • Reconciliation with Indigenous Australians - respecting the cultural heritage of Indigenous Australians and recognising their custodianship of this land as important steps to reconciliation
  • Diversity - valuing diversity of people and communities, respecting differences in culture, race, religion, sexuality, abilities and lifestyles and recognising this as fundamental to truly inclusive and just communities
  • Environmental Sustainability - we aim to operate with minimal or no impact on the environment whilst also promoting its value
  • Spirit - we believe in a holistic approach that supports mind, body and spirit, respecting any and all faiths and spirituality or none at all.
